This makes the movie a lot more interesting than I initially thought and elevates my regard for it on par to hereditary, can't believe i didn't catch the undertones of the fascist cult since i just desperately wanted dani to heal from her pain. Horror has turned into a shitshow and people have become convinced that jump scares denote how scary a horror movie is. That is complete bullshit it denotes how fucking lazy it is. Movies like the Conjuring and Annabelle and all those shitty others like the Gallows, Happy Death Day, etc. arent real horror they are jump scare movies. Midsommar, Hereditary, The Lighthouse and The Witch are genuine horrors that fill you with unease and fear. Dont rely on jump scares at all. They are directorial masterpieces and I hope thousands of future directors use them as inspiration as I will. They are a breath of fresh air and movies I can actually get invested in as I know its not going to have a bullshit ending where everything is right and okay and the good guys banish the spirit. I want unpredictability because modern horror is boring and its dying. Directors like Ari Aster and Robert Eggers are the saviours of the genre. I could go into depth of how you missed the point on almost everything. The themes of family and community, the detrimental mindset of the anthropologist at times and the other themes shown throughout the movie but you probably get those comments on here all the time. This is a movie that sure isnt for everyone but is new, its different and its trying not to be those fucking terrible mainstream horrors. And I love that for it and I aspire to write and direct something even half as good as Midsommar.

I cant believe you see the boyfriend as shitty here especially when you say its his fault he ends up being burned alive when she decided to do so after she thought he cheated on her WHEN THE DUDE WAS PUT UNDER THE INFLUENCE AND RAPED AGAINST HIS WILL! This shows the cult dont actually care about anyone-they care about their beliefs and agenda-manipulating a person to get the response out of the protagonist that they wanted MAKING HER VICTIM BLAME HER BOYFRIEND FOR BEING MANIPULATED ALL THE SAME! They make the boyfriend pay the price cause they wanted her to get rid of anyone they didnt deem worthy. The last part of this film scared me and pissed me off-scared me to think i could be raped and then have no say for my defence and be killed for the sake of a cults selfish desires-what pisses me off is people forgetting about him being raped OR EVEN BEING OK WITH IT. I guaran-fucking-tee you-switch the roles of boyfriend and girlfriend and everybody would bash this film for victim blaming a woman being drugged and raped for the sake of a man getting closure-yet the girl here is applauded for freeing herself of a man THAT WASNT WILLINGLY CHEATING ON HER.

This feels like a very needed video, given the overall discussion surrounding the film. Key is the fact that Midsommar is a horror movie; if the film was just sad girl gets happy, but people die to make it happen, that's not intrinsically horrific in and of itself on a thematic level. Rather, the film is sad girl is being passed from one harmful environment to another, but is manipulated into thinking her new life is better, to the point that giving up her individuality and people around her dying feels justified to potentially to the audience. Most of the victims' greatest sins in the film are being human and thus weak at times (e.g. tough for her boyfriend to break up after hearing her entire family just died) yet you're nudged to view their murders as justified, when they pretty clearly aren't. That's chilling. The entire horror is how seductive the cult is to a vulnerable person, and thus how seductive it is to us watching the story unfold through her eyes. On a surface level there's this oddly empowering feeling behind it: a woman casting off an uncaring boyfriend, embracing community and her emotions, going back to nature, all the things self-help types would say are wonderful ideas, yet that is subverted by the fact she's only come to this point by sacrificing the lives of others as well as any remaining shred of her own agency (there's a reason she's dressed as a plant instead of a person at the end. The cult is not empowering for her or other women, it indoctrinates and strips away anything that makes Making the connection with fascism is a massive point, here, and I'm glad the video made it: fascism is a philosophy built on contradiction and a lack of consistent logic, in which you're told that you are by birthright an ubermensch yet at the same time it is continually reinforced that without your race and native soil you are nothing at all. Like the cult it is a wolf in sheep's clothing, the trappings of empowerment and community while instead acting as a vehicle to strip away your individuality and agency.
